Self-care, Motherhood, and Faith for Christian Moms

Dr. LaToya Wiggins, Self-care Strategist

Hey, mama! Welcome to the She is a Nourished Mom blog where we talk about self-care, motherhood, and faith for the Christian mom who wants to transition from worn-out to winning as the mom and woman God called her to be. My name is Dr. LaToya Wiggins, but please call me LaToya. I just want to be your mommy friend and sister in Christ as I teach you how to no longer feel depleted, but how to develop healthy habits to be nourished, renewed, and rejuvenated with biblical principles and self-care strategies that bring peace instead of self-pity.

I am so excited to have you here with me. The She is a Nourished Mom blog is going to assist Christian moms like you who are ready to practice self-care, uplevel your self-care game, or get one if you do not currently have one by bringing you inspiration, motivation, tips, tricks, and resources that will support you in motherhood and other areas of your life.

My beautiful family

I would love to share a little bit about myself with you so that you can get to know me.  I am a mom to three wonderful boys- Kaleb, who is two years old, Jaylen, who is six years old, and Darien, who is thirteen years old. As you see, there is a nice age gap between each of my children. I am also a wife to my husband, Shawn, and we have been married for seven years. My family and I live in Baltimore, Maryland, where I was born and raised. I am a wellness coach, a self-care strategist for Christian moms, and a doctor of physical therapy, so I like to call myself the self-care doctor! Currently, I am taking a break from practicing physical therapy, so I can be more present with my children while they are young and also focus on my business as a wellness coach.

Intertwining my knowledge in the health field with wellness coaching allows me to help moms approach their self-care from a holistic approach which is essential for living healthy and happy because if we lack nourishment physically, mentally, emotionally, or spiritually, one area can affect another area negatively. If you are not mentally well, it can eventually affect your physical health. If you are not physically well, it can affect your mental health. When we are not spiritually well as Christians, all things could fall apart. As a mom who has struggled with anxiety and depression after the birth of my third son in the middle of the pandemic, I know this all too well. When I was not nourishing myself mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually, I experienced burnout.  Once I started to intentionally cater to my physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual nourishment, I began to have more peace and joy in motherhood and life, so each of the different areas of self-care needs to be in sync with each other in order for us to operate as our best selves.

As Christian women, we are going to apply biblical principles to our self-care and not neglect our soul care. This way, we will not operate from a place of selfishness but ensure that we are not serving our loved ones and others from an empty cup. So, mama, I am reassuring you right now that it is perfectly fine to practice self-care as a Christian mom. Remember that our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, took time out to get away from the crowds and nourish himself with prayer, rest, and solitude (Mark 1:35, Matt 14:22-23, Mark 6:3, Mark 6:46, Mark 7:24, Luke 5:16). So come on this journey with me and let’s practice finding more harmony in our life– not balance, but harmony– and be sure that we are operating in the word of God while developing our own winning mom self-care routines, so we can pour the BEST of ourselves into our loved ones and STOP giving them the worn out and ran down version.

As a Christian mom, you can begin prioritizing self-care by downloading The Busy Christian Mom's Self-care Workbook. This FREE resource will assist you in identifying the areas of self-care that are most relevant for you to focus on in this season of motherhood, as well as provide guidance on how to prioritize self-care even when you are busy.  I hope that this article has given you some clarity on the importance of Christian moms practicing self-care.
